I have been overwhelmed with yard work this year, but in the spirit of "when life gives you lemons..." I decided to take pleasure in the entire garden today, not just the pretty flowers that I want to be there. I mean, who are we to judge, anyway? What makes one plant beautiful, and one a common weed? Here's a tour of the less cultivated parts of my garden:

Stash Busting

Every now and then, you need to take a hard look at your stash and try to use up some of the beads that have been hanging around for a while, or might be lonely leftovers from a larger, long-ago completed project. That’s what I did this weekend. I tried to make pretty, unique projects without buying anything new. Here are my results:

Artbeads Winter Enchantment Project

My backyard in January

For this season's Artbeads.com blogger project, we were asked to design jewelry based on winter. Here in Wisconsin, winter is a long season. Our first cold snap comes in October and we're usually not seeing daffodils until late April. The season is long, but it isn't bleak. We have wonderful white snow, beautiful bare brown branches, and brilliant blue skies peeking through whenever we can. For this project, I wanted to explore working with some new-to-me materials. While I often use glass beads in my designs, I haven't worked with artisan-made lampworked beads before. I was immediately drawn to these lampworked art beads when I started planning my winter-white necklace. Brass accents and just a hint of blue completed the palette, and I had this design together in no time.

This necklace and earrings set came together very nicely. My original intention was to string the necklace, but I wanted the lampworked beads to be visible from all sides. Making beaded links instead set the beads off. I rummaged through my supplies for brass jump rings, thinking 5 or 6 mm would be the perfect size. I only found these super-sized rings, though, so I decided to try it out. I like the look even better. It's more open and airy.

I wasn't sure what to do with the scraps, so I just cut them into random heart shapes. A few days later, I had this idea. If you don't have a felted sweater handy, just use felt from the fabric store.

Simple Gifts

It seems like Christmas was months ago, but I am so thankful for some of the gifts I received, I wanted to write a quick post about it. This was a year that many people felt crunches -- both time and money -- and there was a lot of discussion both in the media and in my own family about cutting back or simplifying when it came to gift giving.

I have always believed that it's the thought that counts and it's better to give than to receive. Sounds trite, but I've always felt this way and believe I've lived this truth. A gift selected and given with love is the most important gift of all. The value is in the process, not the item itself.

This year, I spent a delightful day shopping in a non-mall venue with a dear friend. I purchased gifts for the people I loved. I thought about them, how they would use the gift, shared a story or two about them with my friend as we shopped, and truly enjoyed myself. My daughter helped me wrap the gifts and prepare the packages for mailing. We had a lovely evening away from the TV (and Facebook) and felt the Christmas Spirit in our home.

The gifts pictured above are gifts I received. They too were selected with me in mind and given with true generosity and a nice dose of the Christmas Spirit. The scarves are from my mother in law and are something I never thought I needed but now can't imagine not having. They are pretty and feminine and just my style. The house pin is a gift from my mom and dad. It was made by a little girl whose class decided to raise money for Haiti. It speaks to my love of houses, philanthropy, and good-old-fashioned arts and crafts. In this year that I am selling a house and hoping to buy another one, this pin reminds me that a home is any house with a big heart inside. The peacock feather is from a close friend. It reminds me of the "stray" peacock that was living in her yard a few years ago and it's a reminder to me to be strong and proud (and maybe a little vain) -- all qualities that are important for me this year. The necklace is from a new friend, but honestly -- how perfect: I'm a jewelry book editor, and now I have book jewelry. I'm proud to be her editor and her friend, and I wear this necklace for inspiration.

I don't mean to be ranting in this post. I just want to offer a gentle reminder that simple gifts, gifts from the heart, are all anyone needs and are worth all the money in the world.

Snow Day Project

When my kids were in preschool and I was a stay-at-home mom, I loved to wear colorful, seasonal sweaters. Now that they are teens and I'm working for a living, not so much. Here's a fun way to upcycle your old wool sweaters (this would work with blankets or throws as well):

Step 1: Forget all the rules of laundry, and throw your sweater in the washer set to hot water. Add detergent and a few towels and/or a pair of jeans.

Step 2: As the washer agitates, the wool will begin to shrink and felt. When the cycle is done, check to see if you're happy with the progress. My sweater felted a little, but I could still see the stitches. I liked the look, so I tossed it in the dryer. Here's how it came out:

Step 3: Cut the sweater as if it's fabric in a shape to fit a pillow form. I used one side seam as an edge. Turn right sides together, and sew the open sides, leaving a small gap to insert the pillow form.

Step 4: Turn the pillow case right sides out and insert the pillow. Hand sew the gap closed. You'll find the wool "swallows" up your stitches, so using a doubled thread is fine and you'll hardly see the hand stitching.

Oconomo-walk

My town is a great walking town. There are two large lakes, and most weekend days will find an eclectic mix of people walking, running, or strolling around the "lake loop." On my most recent walk, I passed a woman pushing a cat in a stroller. Yes, a cat. That can only be topped by what I saw this summer: An adorable pug in full life jacket, floating on a boogie-board while his big-brother black lab played an endless game of water-catch. Unfortunately, I don't have pictures of the cat or the dog. But here are a few of the view:

Colors of Fall Design Challenge

My first job out of college was at a small advertising and public relations firm in Philadelphia. I was a PR writer and I loved everything about that job -- my new Mac (circa 1985), my downtown office and commute, crisp business cards, exciting clients, demanding deadlines -- all of it. But what really intrigued me was the art department. They did magical things with x-acto knives, tissue paper, typography books, markers, fine-line pens, and Spray Mount. But the most magical of all was the Pantone color set. I found it mesmerizing.

I must say 25 years later the world of graphic design is still magical and mysterious to me. But thanks to modern technology, I can pretend every now and then, and play around with type, color, and layouts on my own.

That's why this month's Artbeads Blog Partner challenge was so much fun. We were asked to visit Pantone's site and review the newly released Fall Fashion Color Collection. I had a little too much fun playing with the Color Scheme Designer 3 tool. It helped me see combinations in new ways, and kept me from relying on my usual favorites.

For my inspiration colors, I selected lagoon, chocolate truffle, rose dust, and endive. I started with chocolate truffle (who wouldn't?). In the glass bead category I found 8mm deep cut nuggets in brown tiger eye and topaz. For the endive, I went to the gemstones and selected these adorable little peridot rounds. The copper-plated leaf links brought in the rose dust. At first I was challenged to find a blue that was true to Pantone's Lagoon and then I remembered to check the ceramics. These aqua glazed porcelain roundels were just the accents I needed.

Here's my two-strand necklace, accented with autumn leaves and copper chain. For fun, I tried adding color to the copper components with ammonia. My hope was to capture the color of the porcelain beads. You can see traces of aqua on the leaves. It worked much better on the earrings!

These earrings combine peridot dangles with porcelain beads and copper leaves. Perfect for summer-into-fall accessorizing.

Finally, I took all the extras and assembled this jumbled bangle bracelet. I love how the tiny peridot beads peek out from the copper web.

Bead&Button Show

This year was a whirlwind, to put it mildly. I kicked things off with a day-long workshop on Sunday with the amazing Mary Hettmansperger where I had fun with metal clay for the first time, learned a lot about torches, and was delighted that I could just play and create for 7 hours.

Monday night I caught up with Sherry Serafini, Amy Katz, and Paulette Baron, who have just turned in a spectacular book that I now have the pleasure of editing. Look for its release at next year's show.

Tuesday through Thursday were packed with meetings. So many talented artists and so many great book ideas! I hope they come together. The early acquisition stage is so exciting, but I enjoy following the process through to proposals, manuscripts, and finally books!

Wednesday night was the Meet the Teacher's reception. This is truly an event to experience. Eager fans were lined up around the length of the convention center. The doors opened and the room literally buzzed all night. I was proud to see so many of our authors -- past and future. That night was a combination of a high-school reunion and a high-class exclusive shopping event. There are really no words to describe it.

Thursday afternoon I slipped away for a quick class on torch techniques with Steven James. I learned to fuse fine silver links, add color to headpins with fused glass, and torch a tasty treat during the break. Steven teaches all over the country, so if you have a chance to take a class I highly recommend it. He's working on Eco Chic jewelry right now -- fun!

Friday morning I had my demonstration and book signing for The Absolute Beginners Guide. It was hard to compete with the opening of the show, but I had a few lovely ladies sit with me to practice wrapped loops. I love teaching, and I hope I'll do more of it this coming year.

I had about an hour on Friday to booth hop. I didn't shop at all, but there were a few old and new friends to find. I stopped by the Wubbers' booth and saw a demo of some new loop-making pliers. They were thrilled to see their pliers in the book. I also had a quick visit with the fab Jill MacKay. Jill gave me some clasps last year, and was pleased to see them in the book this year. Jill's designs are pretty and practical -- I 'm a big fan. Here we are hamming it up for Mary Wohlgemuth:

Summer Days, Summer Nights

This month's Artbeads blogging theme was summer-time fun. When I think of summer, I think of sun, sand, and slowing down. These sunny day bracelets are a perfect way to capture the mood.

I love, love, love the Czech glass from Artbeads. My new favorite is the fire polished fuchsia and lemon. Just like a summer sunset! I combined the fuchsia and lemon with Ruby AB, Orange AB, and a mix of pink tones. I like using pre-mixed blends for bracelets like these, because there are always some unique colors I may have not found myself.

Whenever I went on vacation as a little girl, I would always pick a silver charm for my charm bracelet to remind me of my trip. Today, you can pick charms like these to represent a memory, or maybe just to dream about a vacation you wish you had! Check out all the charms here.

I've been a huge fan of Heather Powers since I was first introduced to her work in the early days of BeadStyle. I love her beads, I love her style, and she's a super-nice person. When I was writing The Absolute Beginners Guide: Stringing Beaded Jewelry, I knew the bead glossary was a very important part of the book. I wanted to show as many kinds of beads as I could and help newcomers to the hobby understand all the choices they had. Heather generously gave me some polymer clay beads for this "visual dictionary" of beads.

Now that the book is finished, I wanted to make something special with the beads. I thought of all the things I admire in Heather's work: beautiful beads, natural elements, asymmetrical design, rich, earthy colors ... I must say it was a little humbling to approach this project. I wanted to showcase the beads, of course, but I also wanted them to be fully integrated in the work. Heather's beads are gems to be waiting to be discovered, not dominant focals shouting "look at me!"

A room with a view

There have been many variations on the "old window as wall art" projects, but I just love the version I came up with.

All you need is an old window, a high-resolution photo, some foamcore, a staple gun, two eye screws, and chain.

First, I washed the window. Believe me, it was dirty. It had been sitting in our garage for ages. It's one of the only "old" things that was left in this house, so I had to do something with it.

After the bath, I let it dry for a few days. I wanted to be sure all the moisture was out of the wood. Meanwhile, I picked a favorite photo (I took this one last summer of the neighbor cows when DJ and I were on our morning walk). I ordered a poster-sized enlargement from Wallgreens.com.

I glued the poster to a piece of foamcore, and stapled the entire thing to the back of the window. Steve helped me with the eye screws and chain, and here's the result:

Today is the first day of Spring, and after a little snowfall yesterday, we have sunny skies and warm(er) temperatures. In honor of this delightful day, I bring you my latest Artbeads creation.

When I heard the theme was "The Beauty of Spring" I went immediately to the Czech Glass and selected large bell flowers in translucent white and pink crystal. I also chose small fuchsia crystal and a blue/purple/jonquil combination. I knew balled headpins would add the detail the flowers needed. Because I would be using plain loop connections, I only needed 1 1/4" long headpins. Here's my tray of goodies before I got started:

I was going for the look of a group of naturalized flowers that had just burst forth from the ground. While we do have a few shoots peeking out from the muddy ground, we're still about a month away from flowers, so I had to use my memory and imagination for inspiration. Fixing the looped flowers to chain would give the clustering look I wanted. I started with the largest beads, since I had fewer of those. I added a tiny daisy spacer to the headpin, and then the glass flower.

Are you wondering about that out-of-place coral round? Well, that's what I use to measure so I get uniform loops. It takes 1 cm of wire to turn a plain loop. My red bead is a 10mm. So, by placing it on my headpin, making a flush cut above it, and then removing the bead, all my loops will be even. I ended up making more than 60 for this necklace, so having a guide really helped.

I made these silver connectors to help space out the crowded chains. I like a lush fullness but not a jumbled mess!

Like Christmas and my birthday

I really love my day job. Publishing a book is a long cycle (ask any author) but there are two days I love the most: The day a new manuscript arrives, and the day a finished book comes back from the printer. Last week, I got both! First, Perfectly Paired: Designing Jewelry with Polymer and Metal Clays arrived from the printer. Here's the cover:

This book is a perfect balance between metal clay and polymer clay. Both are fully featured in every project. The book is written in such a way that if you have experience in one but not the other, you'll be able to learn what you need to know without wading through a lot of information you may already know. It's an intermediate-level book, but an ambitious beginner will do just fine. I really enjoyed working with Patti Kimle on this book. We met two years ago at the Bead&Button show to talk about her proposal, we met last year to exchange the projects, and this year she'll be doing a book signing! The other great thing that happened last week was a big box came from Kim St. Jean with projects from her book, Mixed Metal Mania, which is my next big project. Before we saw the projects, the art director, Lisa, and I were brainstorming cover ideas and thought maybe a single image would be good. Well, after we opened the box, Lisa walked away with about 10 cover candidates. Our cover meetings are next week, so I can't wait to see what she comes up with. I can't tell you much more about this book, but let me say that if you like Kim's style, you'll love this book. Kim has a way of making a copper cuff bracelet look like supple leather. Can't wait to dive in and learn how she does it!

In the meantime, there's a long stretch between the day a manuscript arrives and the day the book comes from the printer. That's when the editing takes place, and the design and layout, and the proofreading, and so much more. My current in-the-works project is Lacy Wire Jewelry by Melody MacDuffee. When I edit a book, I have the opportunity to sort of get inside the artist's mind, and understand where the creations come from. I am having a delightful time with Melody's book. If you like filigree (but don't like soldering) this book is for you. If you think filigree is a little frilly, don't worry. Melody does some great work with heavy copper wire and beautiful Krobo beads. See Melody here, and learn more about Soul of Somanya, too.

Must-have tools

A measuring tape and a mirror can be your most valuable tools. Case in point ... this bracelet and earrings set. I was shopping at Michaels and I had to have these cool brass rings. I knew just what I would make -- a multistrand bracelet. When I got home I got to work on the bracelet and while I was at it I whipped up the earrings.

I loved my creations until I tried them on. The focal ring on the bracelet is out of proportion to my wrist, and I have a pretty big wrist. The earrings are attractive, but much too long. Time for a quick re-design.

The earrings have a similar look without the extra dangle:

and the bracelet became half of a necklace:

I like the end result much more than what I started with, and it fits better, too.

Easy Peasy Kid Pleaser

Bake your cookies on a stick. It makes them so much more interesting and fun to eat, especially on a spring day (I'm assuming spring has arrived somewhere in the country!). That's three-year-old Karin between her two friends Scott and Laura back in 1966. Weren't our moms clever?

Ornaments

Back in December, I had this great idea to make ornaments and use them as present toppers. I had so much fun with my felted Snowpeople, that I wanted to keep going. Well ... the one thing I did not have in December was a lot of time to sit around and do lapwork! My felted balls were put aside for another time.

Now that the Olympics are on, it's the perfect job. It doesn't require a lot of light or concentration, and it keeps me busy during all those heats!

Start with some wool roving and a felted bead. You can make your own felted beads (there are directions in Altered You!) but I've been buying mine from Art Girlz. Use a needle felting needle to work the roving into the surface of the bead. There is no right or wrong way to do this, and you can make up your pattern as you go -- my kind of craft!

I used the felted beads to make these ornaments. I strung them on craft wire, made swirls and loops, and layered them with sequins and some gaudy Czech glass beads leftover from an assortment I bought:

Project Update

A few posts ago, I laid out all the projects I wanted to complete during my winter couch-potato TV watching time. I've made some progress. I started out during the superbowl with these darling boxes.

They were easy to cut and fold (especially because my basket of Christmas Cards was still on the coffee table!). It was fun to re-read all the Christmas messages in a less-hurried time, and then I had no regrets when I upcycled the beautiful cards. I only completed one into the box, and the rest will store flat until next year. I stashed them in my box of Christmas wrapping paper (along with the folding directions) so I won't forget about them. You can find directions to make your own, here. Come to think of it, I've got some Valentine's Day cards out now...

I showed you my foray into bead stitching, with Amy's darling ring. I'm working on some earrings now, but I need a little more concentration (and light) than I get in front of the TV. Hopefully I'll have something to show on Monday.

I've also started the jewelry reconstruction. Sometimes when I'm wearing a piece, I realize it's a little "off," so I've been tweaking here and there and feel like I've got some brand new pieces for very little effort.

Super Easy Hostess Gift

We were invited to our friends' house for a casual and impromptu dinner last night, and we were just bringing wine. Being Valentine's Day and all, a bottle of wine didn't seem like enough, though, so I decided to dress it up a bit. My first try was wire -- nice, but not polished enough. And then I landed on this great wine-bottle lariat idea. Love it. How cute would it be to customize this idea for a shower, or for party favors?

Supplies:

5" chain

loop end of toggle clasp or large jump ring

3-4 charms

2 4-6 mm crystal beads

2 headpins

jump rings as needed

1. Attach the toggle loop or large jump ring to one end of the chain.

2. Attach a charm to the other end.

3. Attach the remaining charms on each side of the chain near the end with the charm.

4. String a crystal on a headpin and make the first half of a wrapped loop. Connect to the chain and finish the wraps. Repeat with the remaining crystal and headpin.

5. Wrap the chain around the neck of the wine bottle and drop the end through the loop.

The Book, bead spinning and bead soup

I got to review a galley copy of my book last week. The name has changed to The Absolute Beginners Guide to Stringing Beads, and the cover is a little different than the one you see on the right. Galley is kind of an old fashioned term, but what it means is the book is about 75% finished and this was my chance to "speak now or forever hold my peace." Can I say that I just love this book? I've had a nice vacation from the projects, and seeing everything laid out and beautifully photographed was a real treat. There were lots of little post-it-note questions from my editor, about bead counts, or materials, or specific directions. There was also a request for "just one more" piece of jewelry ... a seed bead project to demonstrate a beaded bail. I knew just what I wanted to make, but to save time, I bought a bead spinner.

Have you ever used one of these? I've seen them demonstrated many times. I made up my bead soup and started to spin, but I just couldn't get the hang of it. After I few tries, I dumped out the beads and strung them one by one. It felt a little more real, and here's the result (shh, don't tell my editor).

Hearts!

This month, the Artbeads blogging project was hearts. Imagine my delight! I had a really hard time selecting, because there were so many amazing choices. I finally honed in on these unusual copper heart pendants and beads. I also chose a few heart-themed charms. See more copper choices here. I had a great time working with the copper hearts. They are so warm and inviting.

Here are the hearts, charms, and clasp I started with:
I raided my stash of 3 mm and 4 mm gemstones and pearls for this necklace, and added a second strand of tiny size 15 copper charlottes:

This piece is what I had in mind when I placed my order. I dipped into my collection of Czech crystals, leftover copper beadcaps, and chain for this unusual assortment. I love how the entire piece came together:

Finally, the largest pendant needed just a simple backdrop. I had a too-short chain piece, but by combining it with the silk ribbon and just two bead links, the necklace is the perfect length. That's why you should save your scraps! You never know:

I always get excited when I learn something new. Thanks to my friend Amy Katz, I learned tubular peyote and made an adorable ring!

Amy, Sherry Serafini, and Paulette Baron have teamed up to work on a very exciting book project that I'll be editing. To say I'm inspired by their work is the understatement of the year. I am so lucky to work with artists like them! I'll be blogging more about their book a little later. It's still in the early stages.

So at Christmas, I was delighted (and a little overwhelmed) to open a package from these three inspiring ladies and discover that they each had sent me a project kit from their collection.

Amy's directions were so easy to follow, and everything in the kit was labeled. She even included needles! Here's the first stage of the ring, when it was just peyote...

Next up is Sherry's earring project, and then I think I'll be skilled enough to try Paulette's bracelet. Stay tuned.

Spending time on the couch

I'm really not a big TV fan, but lately our DVR has been whirring constantly. It's the heart of winter here in Wisconsin, and even though we're experiencing a January thaw, single-digit temperatures will be back in full force before we know it. The girls and I have our favorites: Modern Family is a hoot, Greys Anatomy and Private Practice are heating up, Brothers & Sisters is like watching a train wreck but addictive all the same, we had the Golden Globes last week, we were going to pass on Idol this season, but "pants on the ground" reeled us back in, and OMG, Project Runway and the delightfully gossipy Models of the Runway are back already! Even football has been quite dramatic, and we're just a few weeks away from the Winter Olympics.

So in my "everything must be rationalized to be ok" state of mind, I've made a long list of lapwork to do in front of the TV. So here's my list, and we'll see how much of it I get done before the end of the Winter Olympics:

* Jewelry deconstruction/reconstruction: I have many pieces that I'm just not wearing and I can use the beads for something else. I have some pieces that I've been wearing but need adjustments, like length. And I have some pieces that really need matching earrings. So, as I watch TV, I can sort through my existing jewelry and make these easy modifications that I never seem to get around to otherwise.

* Christmas ornaments. Don't laugh. I had a blast making needle felted beads in December, and bought all the findings necessary to turn them into ornaments. Problem was, December always gets a little busy (wonder why) and I never finished. These will be easy to do now, and I just need to pack them away in the right spot so I find them next year!

* Christmas-card gift boxes. I saw this on another blog, and it will be so easy to do. I still have my Christmas cards out. I'll pick the prettiest and fold them into little boxes for next year.

* Knit some fingerless gloves. It's been a while since I've knit. I like small knitting projects -- instant gratification and all. I found a great skein of yarn as I was rooting through my stash. It was something I just had to buy but then never used.

* Learn bead stitching. I was the lucky recipient of three beautiful gifts this Christmas: project kits from my bead stitching authors at work. As I've said before, kits are an excellent way to learn a new technique. Everything is at your fingertips, you have no decisions to make, and the directions are straightforward. I've already started on a tubular peyote ring.

What do you call it when you take one of your own crafts and change it up into something new? I'm calling it mecycling. Remember when I made my own version of Mark Montano's Urban Corsage project? These were so fun to make -- the perfect combination of sewing and crafting. I got a little carried away and made five of them. Well, fun to make, but not really my style to wear.

I've been doing a lot of blog surfing lately, and I loved what Lisa made for teacher gifts this year. Check out her bog -- she makes beautiful polymer clay buttons and much more.

It got me thinking that if I shifted the velcro just a bit, I'd have something similar.

Hers are much cuter and more functional without the extra embellishments, but my version works for me. Now I've got to stash one in the car so I can use it next time I hit Stone Creek.

So given it's the new year and all, it's been a time of reflection and looking to the future. I've had a great time with this blog for nearly two years! I'm excited to know that I have readers in nearly every state, as well as several countries. But, you're a very quiet bunch. I know, I'm the same way. I have about 15 blogs that I visit regularly -- some I really look forward to seeing each day. But, I rarely comment. I don't know why, I just feel like I don't have anything unique to contribute. I hate the term lurker ... I'm just a silent observer and admirer.

Anywho... I really would like to know what you think about my content, as I look forward to more blogging in 2010. I've added a poll to the blog, so feel free to let me know what you'd like to see more of. Is it jewelry making? Fiber and fabric arts? Good old arts and crafts? Cooking and recipes? Gardening? Karin and Mollie and Pam?

Well, it won't be my version of Julie & Julia, but I have a plan for meals for the next few months. This is always a tricky time of year for us. Haley is growing, growing, growing and playing basketball, so she needs to eat twice as much, it seems. Meredith is in her 6th month of vegetarianism, but her go-to meal is usually pasta and cheese, so she needs a better plan. Steve & I are growing in other ways ... January is always a good month to shed the old food habits and hopefully a few pounds along with them. I'm still holding on to the tradition of a family dinner every night, but I don't want to short-order cook for everyone's preferences. And, realistically, with job and sport schedules, I need a meal that can be served early for some, and held later for others.

So, I decided to consult with Mollie and Pam:
I selected 20 weeknight dinners for the month. Weekends can be more spontaneous. Meredith has agreed to eat some seafood, so there are one or two meals with shrimp or clams. The rest are either vegetarian, or can be prepared with the meat added at the last minute, so I can serve hers plain and double-up for Haley.

I made my calendar and a shopping list for each week. So far, so good. We've had a few unusual things and we've liked everything so far. The best part is having a plan, knowing what I'm going to make, and having the ingredients at-the-ready. What are you making this month?

New Work

A few weeks ago an early Christmas present arrived from Artbeads ... some Hill Tribe Silver components and some Czech glass. It's taken me a while to make jewelry to show you and to get the pictures taken, but I'm finally done. Meredith stepped in and took over the photo shoots for me. She's much more dedicated than I am and I hope you enjoy her photography here.

The first pieces I worked with were Hill Tribe Silver. I've written about Hill Tribe Silver before. It's one of my favorites, perhaps because the pendants are so natural, or perhaps because the tribe is named Karen...

Here's a description from the Artbeads Website:

These Thai beads and pendants are made by the Karen Hill Tribe in northern Thailand using traditional tribal methods passed down from generation to generation. Purchasing these Thai beads helps sustain a traditional craft and provides the Karen people with a reliable source of income. The silver content in our Hill Tribes silver beads and pendants is typically 95-99%, even higher than sterling (92.5%). This higher silver content is softer and therefore easier to shape into all the unique and wonderful styles. On close inspection you will notice that no two pieces are exactly alike, attesting to the handmade nature of these beautiful pieces.

When Hill Tribe Silver was first available, there were pendants and beads to choose from, but not many findings. Now, you can find everything you need to complete a necklace. I fell in love with this flower pendant, but I'm also happy I could choose cones and a clasp to match. Because the silver is more pure than sterling, it has a whiter appearance. I'm happy that the finishing components match the focal pendant. For this necklace, I mixed in some tiny 3mm pearls, seed beads that reminded me of the sea and sand, and some knot-shaped accent beads I had in my stash.

Next came these cute Hill Tribe Silver hearts. I was in a Twilight mood, so I added ruby red crystal drops. Meredith's photo treatment creates a softer, more organic mood, though -- similar to the spirit of the original hearts.

I switched gears when it came to the Czech glass, going for a more sophisticated holiday-party look. I love these fire polished dark green round beads, and while my design may not be the most creative, it's classic, especially for this time of year. I created a cascade by extending a length of chain, and wrapping a bead on each side of each link, with three on the bottom. Then, I added a few linked beads to accent the chain. The necklace is about 15 inches, with a 3-inch dangle.

While I was compiling my order, a suggestion popped up. I really like it when websites have the "you may also like" feature, because honestly, there are so many choices it can be hard to decide. I never would have seen these beads, but I was intrigued by the silver lining. I chose five 10 mm and decided to pair them with 4 mm silver and blue rounds. By stringing random patterns and adding 6 mm silver rounds, I created an icy holiday mix that really catches the light.

Pantone unveiled the color of 2010 and it's turquoise! I'm a softie for year-end lists, new year predictions, and especially this year -- best of the decade roundups. What was your high point of the year? I think mine was finishing my third book. I'm really proud of this one, and can't wait to show you more.

You may call it Black Friday, but I call it Bright Friday. Why do I love this day? I'm not a mall shopper, so I stay away from the stores. In fact last year I shredded all my Black Friday shopping circulars and made these cute ornaments. I made enough food for an army yesterday, so I know everyone is taken care of in that department. There's no grocery shopping to do or dinner to make tonight. I have plenty of time for a long walk, and since my husband isn't working, he can join me. I know I'll be able to read for several hours this afternoon -- one of my true indulgences. What are you doing today?

I have a lot to heart today -- makes up for the last few Monday's I've missed!

First of all, if you know me, you know I heart snowmen. I have a great collection that comes out just after Thanksgiving and stays around until February.

Second, I heart the ArtGirlz. I've posted about them in the past, and I recently purchased a snow person kit from them. Kits are a great way to dip into a craft. You don't have to run around collecting supplies, and someone's already thought through the directions for you. ArtGirlz give you enough guidance to get the job done, but they respect your crafting instincts and let you make most of the little decisions on your own. Here are a few of my new friends:

Third, I heart needle felting.

I've been looking for an easy needle felting project and this was it. I took some wool roving (a very tiny bit) and worked it into the felt ball with a felting needle. It was very easy to do a free-form heart. My snowmen are full of love! I also had fun felting the "coal" eyes and mouths.

But it gets better! ArtGirlz also sell a kit for culturally diverse snow people. How cool is that? I couldn't pass it up. Don't they make you happy?

Easy Scarf Project

Although a scarf is about the easiest thing to knit, I have two no-knit scarf projects to share with you. The first one is really fun if you're a color-outside-of-the-lines crafter. The second is just as easy, but a little more measuring is involved.

No-knit yarn scarf:
I have been wearing this scarf for about four years, so it looks a little raggedy, but I still love it.

In fact, I love it so much, I made a second one to go with a different coat.

What I like the most about this project is you have so much control over the colors, the length, and the width. I wanted a scarf that would wind around my neck several times and then have the perfect length ends to tuck into my coat without being too bulky.

To make the scarf, gather miscellaneous yarns in complementary colors. I chose several weights and textures. You'll also need a product called Solvey (it's like a roll of plastic wrap but it dissolves in water). Finally, you'll need thread and a sewing machine.

1. Determine your finished length. I did this by draping a strand of yarn around and around and then measuring it.

2. Cut a piece of Solvey equal to your desired length and place it on a work surface (a kitchen island or long dining room table is great).

3. Cut and arrange your fibers along the length of the Solvey. You want them fairly close together.

4. If you want to make little flourishes like this one, just wind some yarn around your finger and pin it in place with two pins crossed like an X.

5. When you're happy with the way your scarf looks, layer a second piece of Solvey on top of the yarn. Pin through all the layers, creating a "sandwich."

6. With contrasting or matching thread, sew a straight line across the width of the scarf about 6 inches from the end. Repeat on the other end.

7. Randomly sew between the two "anchor" seams until most of the fibers are secured. Have fun making zig-zags and curves with your thread. About every four inches, make sure you sew completely across the width of the fibers. To secure the flourishes, sew across the bundle at least once -- you want to secure it but give it room to spring up. As you sew, your packet will become more compressed.

8. Soak the bundle in water to dissolve the Solvey. If your fibers are wool, handle carefully to avoid felting. Rinse until the Solvey is completely dissolved.

9. Dry over your shower curtain rod. Blot with a bath towel to speed the drying process.

10. On each end, tie the loose strands together to create fringe. Enjoy!

Flannel-lined fabric scarf

You'll need about 1 yard of flannel and about a half-yard of several fabrics. I used a similar scientific method to measure my desired length: I draped myself with yarn, measured the length, and then rounded the number to make the math easier. My length is about 80 inches and my width is about 9.

1. Cut a piece of flannel to your desired length and width, or sew together a few pieces to create the length you want. Mine has a seam in the middle.

2. Decide what you'd like to do with the accent fabric. I decided I wanted about a foot of accent color on each end. You can add three or four accents if you'd like. Cut your fabric and sew together until you have a rectangle the same size as the flannel piece. Iron your seams flat.

3. With wrong sides together, pin the fabric to the flannel. Beginning at the 1/3 mark of a short end, sew toward the long edge. Turn the corner and continue sewing the scarf together until you are back to the short edge where you began. Turn the corner, and sew about 1/3 of the way across. Secure the thread by backstitching a few times.

4. Trim all the edges and clip the corners.

5. Turn the scarf right-side out, using the hole at the bottom. Press the scarf.

6. Close the seam by either hand stitching together or fusing with fusible webbing.

Voila!

Fall Gardens

I ran into an old friend a while ago and among other things she asked about my gardens. After politely listening to a long list of coulda-woulda-shoulda's from me, she said, "well, there's a big difference between spring gardens and fall gardens." And, you know, I really agree. There's nothing like the smell of mulch in May, and the sight of fresh beds and young plants ... so much potential! But I really love the rambling leftovers that come in the fall. I love the many shades of browns and the rustling leaves. More than anything, I love the freedom that comes from walking through the remains of a garden and just enjoying what's left instead of feeling the urge to weed, trim, transplant...

Our winter is long enough that I have months to plan my spring garden to-do list. Here are some fall photos to enjoy now.

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. When my kids were little, they always had great costume ideas, and we had a lot of fun pulling them together (although sometimes nobody outside of our family had a clue what they were). They're not little anymore, though, so costumes -- if they want them -- are their own responsibilities. This year, I've been scouting some Halloween sites of my own. This is one of my gift hearts. I needed to stretch away from my normal color comfort zone, but I've been wearing this all day and it makes me happy. Next week I'll show you what I made with the millefiore hearts.

I believe little design decisions can have a big impact on the jewelry you make. At my last book signing, I was demonstrating how to make plain and wrapped loops. I had a strand of crystals and some headpins. I decided to take my own advice and see how many different looking earrings I could make with the exact same materials. Here's how far I got, in between chatting and talking books ...

Now that I've finished the book and taken a little break from jewelry making, it was fun to take some time and play. Making jewelry just for me helps me explore new ideas and push myself into new areas. This week I had great fun with some unusual Swarovski products from Artbeads.

I had never seen this crystal-wrapped faux suede before, and now that fall is here, I was in the mood to experiment with browns and coppers. I used the smoked topaz and golden yarns blended with indigo-crystal accented copper chain. I really like the combination of soft and hard materials. To finish, I used a topaz rock pendant. For me, it gives the right weight to the design while keeping with the natural theme. What do you think?

Next up, I wanted to experiment a little more with my copper wire. I love the combination of the indigo with the dark copper. Isn't this copper ball just the cutest thing? I made it in the same way you'd begin to ball yarn, and just strung crystals along the way.

Once you start working with new metals like copper, you quickly realize that if you've made a necklace, it's time for coordinating earrings. I'm not a fan of matchy-matchy, but I love to coordinate.

And just because I couldn't stop, I made a silver pair.

If you're a crystal geek, you know that Swarovski has recently discontinued its line of bicone crystals (5301) and replaced it with the new Xilion cut 5328, seen here. I'm happy to report that from a distance, they look just like bicones, but the sparkle is significant. If you have a stash of bicones, you can easily blend them with the new cut. These have a 2x AB finish.

We were lucky this summer to see our dear friends of 19 years when they stopped for a quick overnight visit during their family vacation to Wisconsin and Illinois. Although the visit was short, it was delightful (and intense as we tried to pack a year's worth of conversation into 48 hours). My friend was so nice to bring me a special hostess gift. What I love about this is that she went out of her way to stop at a bead shop (not her thing, she's a cook as you'll see here) and select each of these beads just for me. She even had the owner write down the names of the stones, lest she forget before she gave them to me.

Clockwise from left, we have fluorite, Czech glass, died magnesite, and millefioriI especially like the Czech glass, because it's drilled horizontally -- not that common with hearts. What will I make? What would you make?

New Work

Months ago, I bought some shell pearls from Rings & Things with the express intention of including them in my book. As I was planning the projects, I would pull them out, and they would sit nicely on my work table. But, they never quite made it into the book. I'm not complaining, though, because now I can keep them all for myself!

This is a simple set, but I love it. Shell pearls can be chipped where the hole is drilled, so I maximized my collection by using bead caps. I'm a little concerned that the beadcaps will ding the pearls over time, but since I'm keeping these for me, I'll have to risk it and see. I'll let you know!

It doesn't matter if you're mainstream or on the road less traveled or facing the fork and not knowing what you should do. Just do something, remember to go slow enough to smell the dandelions, and steady enough to stay the course.

We've had a nice, long, lazy weekend and we've been spending our evenings in the back yard, enjoying the sunset, eating really good fresh food, and then enjoying the bonfire after dark. These end-of-summer days seem precious and I'm happy we've slowed down the pace a little and just kicked back. Happy Labor Day weekend.

National Sewing Month

September is National Sewing Month and this year's theme is Reuse, Remake, Restyle. So no more excuses ... it's time to get out the machine and get to work. What I love about restyling is that the hard work is already done for you. You don't have to try to get a sleeve to fit perfectly, or make buttonholes, or install a zipper. You can concentrate on the fun and fashionable part of the project instead.

In Altered You! you'll find projects to restyle a strappy summer tank top into a school-appropriate T, a pair of shorts into a cute flouncy skirt, a bulky sweatshirt into a bolero-style jacket, jeans into trimmed-out capris, even bed sheets into a beach wrap.

Huh?

So this episode of Runway left us all saying, "huh?" With so many cute looks on the runway, we were so surprised to see Ra'mon and Mitchell in the top spot. Clearly we're not fashionistas, and we do live in the middle of the midwest, but even if that green thing was Avant Garde, it didn't do it for us. Glad to see Mitchell gone, though, and maybe next week they'll get down to business.

Delish Dessert

I really like to cook, but I barely make time to "fix" anymore, especially not desserts. I'm a grab and go weekday cook -- closer to short-order than chef. I make almost everything from scratch, but it's usually no more than five ingredients tossed together and either stir-fried or sauteed, grilled or baked, and must fit into the rotating categories of Mexican, Asian, Wisconsin-American, or Vegetarian.

That said, I love having a reason to find a new recipe and try it out. We're part of an occasional dinner group aptly named Blue Moon. This was my dessert, from our latest get together.

I compiled it from a few of the choices in Pam Anderson's fabulous The Perfect Recipe for Having People Over. And although I could have made the sorbet, I didn't. I went to our local gelateria and selected Lemon Basil, Orange, and Peach. Yum!

The girls are back in school, I'm back to early a.m. dog walks (it's dark already!), better work hours, and hopefully a little more time around the edges for artful crafts. Shirin takes the top spot on Project Runway. I really loved her dress and the stitching detail made all the difference. I must say Haley & I named the top 3 and the bottom 3 this time, so there really weren't any surprises. It seems the editing is such that you really don't get a good feel for everyone, but it's hard with so many designers. I thought Ra'mon was on to something with his color-blocked dress, but once it got labeled as the bowling ball bag, there was no turning back. I see in his bio that he's a designer for Kohls and that dress had a very Kohls feel to it. I still like his idea, but it would take a very confident pregnant woman to wear it. And the egg? Creative but not realistic. And the look on Malvin's face told me he really thought he had the top design and had no idea why he was going home. With Malvin and Ari gone, it seems like quirky is out this season.

It was funny to see all the stick-thin models with these huge bumps. I know when I was expecting, it was more of an all-over effect. I don't think there was one dress last night that would have worked for me.

We're happy about the Models of the Runway after party show. It's been interesting to get to know the personalities a little. Don't you think Fatma is a little delusional?

Just saw Julie & Julia with one of my best food buddies. Loved it, loved it, loved it. All the reviews said it was too long -- we would have stayed for another hour. In fact, we had trouble leaving our seats, and shared a "it's over already?" exclamation when the credits began to roll. Of course we loved the food. I am suddenly craving boeuf bourguignon. And we loved the settings -- my friend is homesick for Europe, while I am missing the New York City scene (also missing my 30s, but that's another story). We loved the husbands. Whose was more endearing --Julie's or Julia's? And whose was more (ahem) hotter -- Julie's or Julia's? I don't have Mastering the Art of French Cooking, but I do have The Way to Cook. It's as good to read as it is to cook from. I really need to revisit it.

So will I be crafting along with Martha's tome, The Encyclopedia of Crafts? I don't think so. But will I rent the movie again next year when it's released on DVD? Absolutely.

Just because I started something the first time he retired, I feel I need to keep you informed (you've been on the edges of your seats like the rest of Wisconsin, haven't you?). Brett Favre has retired, again. Here's the post I wrote in honor of the first retirement. No, wait, it was when he went to play for the Jets instead of staying retired...or was it the second retirement, gosh, I've really lost track. Now, what I'm really hoping is that we can all -- Brett included -- move on.

When I was purchasing some last-minute must-have supplies at my local bead store, the salesperson stopped in the middle of ringing up my transaction and went to assist the UPS guy. Normally, this would be poor customer service, but it allowed me a few minutes to search through the bargain bin they keep near the register. I couldn't resist this purchase. I guess poor customer service really is more like a good sales technique!

I think this would look pretty on leather cord with maybe a double jump ring connection. But instead, I'm going to try my hand at bead stitching. I'm going to make one of Beth Stone's skinny ropes (as soon as I turn in my book), and see if I can stitch a bail as well. I'll post again when the project is finished.

And speaking of the book, my deadline is a week away. I finished my last round of step-by-step photography today. The workspace is getting worse, but I'm really happy with the projects. I can't wait to share more with you.

Jewelry that works for you

Have you heard of the jeweler's handshake? That's when someone reaches out to touch your necklace as part of saying hello. Where I work, it's an everyday occurrence. Not only is the building filled with the editorial teams for the three leading jewelry magazines, almost everyone from reception to accounting to shipping is hooked on the hobby in one way or another. Needless to say, I only wear jewelry to work that I've made myself, and I usually wear more jewelry to work than I do in other aspects of my life.

That is, until I get to my desk and start to work. Within minutes, I'm stripping off rings and bracelets so I can get comfortable at my keyboard. Because, although everything I do is about jewelry, knitting, or some other craft, it's all done electronically. I usually have a tidy, but sparkly, pile next to my computer.

Lately, I've been thinking about jewelry designs with the keyboard in mind. Here are a few of my favorites. They wear well, drape nicely, and most of all, they are unobtrusive when my wrists rest on the desk:

Book Report

Have I mentioned that I'm working on my third book (if you're my kids, insert eye roll here). Here's a peek at my workspace:

Nothing spectacular: magnifying glasses so I don't snip the wrong part of the wire, cell phone because I'm itching to hear from Meredith and I never know when she might call, coffee -- no explanation necessary, work in progress that regretfully needs to be done over...The most exciting part for me are the 17 bags in the tray on the left. They're completed projects, ready for my editor to look over and present at the cover meeting. Yup -- the manuscript isn't due for a month, the book won't be released until next May, but the cover planning and book design are well under way. I feel pretty great about the 17 finished projects until I remind myself that there are at least 12 more to do, and then the little extras I like to have, and then the bonus chapter that's still floating around in my head as a little more than a concept and then, well, I better get to work!

For today's post, I'm going to revisit this cute bracelet I made following directions from Australian Beading magazine:

The heart was a lot harder to make than I thought it would be. In fact, I made about five before I was happy enough with one for the bracelet. I couldn't part with the rejects, though -- they weren't good enough for the bracelet, but they were still appealing in a rustic sort of way.

I wasn't sure how this project would go, so I used German jewelry wire (silver-plated copper) instead of sterling silver to practice. I loved making the "garage-door" links. I was lazy with the jump rings, because I was eager to get the project done.

When I was finished, I loved the project, and wished I had made it in sterling. After a few days of wearing it, one of the connectors snapped. I am sure this is because the metal hardened too much as I was working with it and became brittle. (I have a tendency to get carried away with the hammering and texturing stage, plus the wire wrapping with a gauge this large -- 16? -- requires some wrasseling.) Then, it couldn't stand up to the action a bracelet gets during the course of a few days. So now, this sad little bracelet is in a pile on my work table. I can't bring myself to get rid of it until I recreate it in sterling.

Lessons learned? I'm really not a prototype person. If I'm going to make something, I should just go ahead and make it the right way, the first time. Pay more attention to the little details (jump rings) and have a lighter hand with the texturing.

Hmm. I have the urge to find some wire...

Clasp Act

Sorry for the pun. I just needed to get your attention. If any of you have been to the Bead & Button show, you know what I mean when I say it's overwhelming and wonderful at the same time. After about three hours walking the floor, searching for odds and ends for my next book, I found myself in quite a daze. But then, I came upon Jill McKay's booth. And, I fell into one of those great conversations that seem to happen at the oddest times during the B&B week. Jill has a terrific line of findings. Not only does she have custom lines for Michael's and Joanns, she had her sterling silver collection on display at the show. Here are two clasps that will make an appearance in my next book:

The multi-strand clasp has an added bonus -- a super strong, super tiny magnet -- so it's easy to clasp. The streamlined design lies nice and flat and is quite comfortable.

If you've read Mostly Metals, you already know my soapbox position on clasps. They're an integral part of your jewelry design. They add a finishing touch --and polish -- to your work. And, good clasps like these give you the security you need. You don't want to invest in beautiful gemstones, spend hours stringing the perfect pattern, and then have your necklace tumble its way across the dressing room floor because of an insecure or inexpensive clasp.

Today I bring you the artwork of Christi Anderson of Elemental Adornments. While I adore her birdhouses and scrapbooks, I am quite enamored with her heart series. I've met Christi several times at Bead & Button. What I like the most about her art is the stories and symbolism incorporated into each piece. This time of year, gardening is on my mind. I love my flower beds, and am particularly fond of old fashioned, traditional blooms -- peonies, roses, iris, daylillies, bachelor's button, and bleeding heart to name a few.

May was so busy that my bleeding heart (I always thought that was such a sad name for a beautiful plant) came and went without me photographing it. But, I wanted to show you this instead: Debra Gabel's Bleeding Heart quilt pattern. I'm not sure if this link will work directly, but if you get to her site, click on patterns and then on florals.
